Something is Stirring

Hi Reader,

Have you felt it?

Not full spring. Not yet. But something shifting.

And this year, early February holds a quiet convergence. There are at least four events from various spiritual traditions that happen around this time of year, but since they are all tied to sun and moon cycles in different ways their dates on our Gregorian calendar shift each year.

This year they all fell with within the first two weeks of February - three of the four happened this week! Imbolc (the halfway point between Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox), the Lunar New Year ushering in the Year of the Horse (and more specifically the Fire Horse), and the beginning of Ramadan and Lent. Different traditions. Different languages. Yet all marking a change in energy.

Winter isn’t over. The ground is still cold. And yet… something is stirring.

I’ve been noticing this in my own life and in conversations with clients — a restlessness, a nudge, a sense that movement is coming. Not frantic action. Not impulsive change. But the kind that asks for courage and clarity.

One way to hold this is 'before the horse runs, the ground must thaw'.

February feels like that threshold — where energy is rising, but wisdom reminds us to move with intention.

🐎When Energy Rises, Move with Discernment

February always carries a particular kind of tension. The amount of daylight is slowly increasing. There is the occasional spring-like day trying to fake-us out. Yet it's still firmly winter in many other ways.

And this year, we have the energy of the Fire Horse inviting forward movement, courage, and boldness. At the same time, Ramadan and Lent begin seasons of heightened introspection and spiritual attentiveness. Across traditions, there is both rising energy and deepening reflection.

That combination matters.

Because when energy begins to rise -- especially after a long winter -- it can feel urgent. Restlessness can masquerade as clarity. Momentum can feel like direction.

But movement without discernment leads to disconnection — from our true self, from Spirit, from our deepest values. It can scatter our attention into busy but unproductive action. Or send us spinning in circles, mistaking activity for alignment.

The Horse symbolizes strength and forward motion. Yet even the strongest horse cannot run well on frozen ground.

Before the Horse runs, the ground must thaw.

This time of late winter/pre-spring is not asking for dramatic leaps. It is asking for small, aligned steps --positioning ourselves for what's next. Listening while beginning to move. Testing direction gently. Letting the body and spirit acclimate to the shift in season.

In my work with mid- and late-career professionals, this is often the stage where something begins to stir:
A question you can no longer ignore.
A dissatisfaction that feels different than simple tiredness.
A possibility that keeps returning.

You don’t need to blow up your life to honor that stirring.

You might simply begin by noticing:

  • Where is energy rising in me?
  • What kind of movement feels aligned — not frantic, not forced?
  • What small step would position me well if greater movement is coming?

Winter still has wisdom to offer. But the thaw has begun.

And wise movement begins there.

Snow-covered trees and path in winter

Beneath the Surface Hi Reader, Winter looks like stillness on the surface, but beneath the ground, something essential is happening. In January, we’re often met with loud messages about fresh starts, bold goals, and decisive action. And yet, the natural world tells a different story. Winter is not a pause button so much as a shift in the kind of work being done. Roots deepen. Old matter breaks down. Nutrients gather quietly in the dark. Many of us sense this same tension within ourselves. We...

Hi Reader, Happy New Year! As the calendar turns, many people feel an immediate pull to move forward — to name intentions, make plans, or get clear about what’s next. But the beginning of a new year doesn’t actually ask us to move yet.It asks us to orient. Orientation is different from action. It’s the quiet act of finding your footing — noticing where you are, what you’re carrying, and what direction feels true before you take a step. So many accomplished, thoughtful people move quickly into...

Sunlight shines through a snow-covered forest.

Welcoming Winter! Hi Reader, As December unfolds, we arrive at one of the most sacred turning points of the year: the Winter Solstice. The longest night. The deepest dark. And quietly, almost imperceptibly, the return of the light. Winter invites us into a different rhythm. The world around us slows. Nature rests. The noise softens. And we are invited to do the same -- not to disengage from life, but to listen more deeply within it. This is the season of the North on the Heart Compass: a...
