What wants to grow now?

The Quiet Pull Toward Something More

Hi Reader,

As we move toward the fullness of summer, I find myself paying attention to what has quietly been stirring beneath the surface these past few months.

Not dramatic, fully formed plans.
Not perfectly mapped-out visions for the future.

It's more of a feeling. A tug. A restlessness. A growing awareness that something no longer fits quite the same way it once did. Or perhaps it's a longing for something more meaningful, more creative, more alive.

Many of the people I speak with are not beginning from scratch - even if it feels that way to them. They are thoughtful, accomplished people carrying years of experience, wisdom, and life behind them. Yet something inside them is asking for renewal, alignment, or a different way of living and working.

And perhaps that is one of the invitations of this season: not to force ourselves into becoming someone entirely new, but to notice what wants to grow now.

Spring does not rush toward full bloom overnight. Growth begins quietly -- with small shifts, subtle movements, and tender new shoots that require attention and care.

Maybe our own lives unfold in much the same way.

🌿 What Wants to Grow Now?

One of the challenges of midlife and major life transitions is that we often assume change must look dramatic. We imagine we need a complete reinvention, a perfectly clear vision, or absolute certainty before we begin moving forward.

But many meaningful transitions do not begin with certainty. They begin with awareness and a willingness to stay curious.

We begin to sense that something from deep within us is asking for attention...

  • a desire for more meaningful work,
  • a longing for greater spaciousness,
  • creative energy that has been ignored,
  • exhaustion from living out of alignment,
  • or a quiet inner knowing that your current season is changing.

And yet many people dismiss these inner stirrings because they seem incomplete, impractical, or difficult to explain. We tell ourselves we should already have clarity by now. That we ought to be grateful for what we have. That we cannot move forward until we know exactly what comes next.

But what if clarity does not arrive all at once?

What if discernment begins not by figuring everything out, but by paying attention to what feels alive?

This, I believe, is one of the great misunderstandings about growth and transition. We think transformation begins with a bold decision or dramatic leap. More often, it begins much more quietly.

It begins by noticing what brings energy instead of depletion;
What creates a sense of aliveness rather than heaviness;
What sparks curiosity, peace, or a deeper sense of meaning.

In nature, growth requires more than effort. It requires nourishment, light, rest, patience, and trust in what cannot yet fully be seen.

The same is true in our lives.

Sometimes the next chapter begins through small acts of attention: making space for reflection, reconnecting with forgotten parts of yourself, allowing new possibilities to emerge, or taking one gentle step toward what feels meaningful and true.

You do not need to have the whole plan before starting to move forward.

You do not need to become someone entirely different.

Perhaps this season is less about reinventing yourself and more about becoming more fully yourself.

And perhaps the question is not:
“What should I do with my life?”

But instead:
“What wants to grow now?”

You do not need to force clarity.

Sometimes wisdom emerges simply by creating enough space to listen.

May you remain open and curious to what is emerging and growing within and around you.

Blessings,

Lisa

Your Life is Not a Problem to Solve Hi Reader, Over the past few weeks, I’ve noticed a familiar pattern showing up in many of my client conversations. It often begins with a simple but weighty question: “What should I do next?” From there, it’s easy to move quickly into problem-solving mode -- mapping out options, researching roles, comparing paths, trying to figure out the "right" answer. The focus narrows to which job, which direction, which decision will finally bring clarity. And yet,...

Who Am I Becoming Now? Hi Reader, Over the past few weeks, I’ve been struck by how unpredictable this season has felt. One day it’s 80 degrees and full of light… the next, snow, dark clouds, or heavy winds roll through. Even here in the mid-Atlantic area, the swings have been dramatic -- warmth, then cold, then storms, even tornados, that seem to come out of nowhere. In some ways, it feels like a reflection of the larger moment we’re living in. There is so much happening in the world right...

Hi Reader, Last week I offered a reflection for Well for the Journey's Well Being Wednesday that explored a question that feels especially relevant in our times: What if fragmentation is not the deepest truth about us? Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in Letter From A Birmingham Jail wrote: “We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” Even when life feels divided…even when relationships feel...
